Then said I, &c.— These are the words of the Messiah to the priests of his time, whom he quickly forsook, and broke his staff of loveliness or delight, being no longer inclined to spare them, nor to restrain the people from oppressing the Jewish nation, as he had before restrained them by that covenant which he had made with the neighbouring nations. That decree of God, by which he had hindered the nations from oppressing and destroying the little commonwealth of the Jews, is here called God's covenant. See Houbigant. We may render that that dieth, Zechariah 11:9 that which is dying.
