It is to be supposed, that the Lazarus of the New Testament, is a corresponding name to the Eleazar of the Old. The name itself is a compound of Hazar, helpand El, God. Lazar-houses and Lazarettos, seem to have taken their name from the Lazarus of the parable. (Luke 16:20) Lepers, and persons under diseases of a pestilential or epidemic nature, were sent to them.
