Ephrathite. [Eph'rathite]

Inhabitant of Ephrath or Beth-lehem-judah. Ruth 1:2; 1 Samuel 1:17. The same Hebrew word occurs in 1 Samuel 1:1; 1 Kings 1:11, where some translate 'Ephraimite,' as in the R.V., and as is evidently the meaning of the same word in Judges 12:4, Judges 1:12. As to 1 Samuel 1:1, Elkanah, though a Levite, may have been called an Ephraimite because located in that tribe: cf. Judges 17:7.
