Beth-shean (bĕth'shç'an), house of quiet. Bethsan (bêth'san), or Bethshan (bĕth'-shan). A city five miles west of the Jordan, first in Issachar, but later in Manasseh. Saul's body was fastened to its walls, 1 Samuel 31:10, 1 Samuel 31:12; after the captivity it was called Scythopolis, and was a chief city of Decapolis; now Beisan, having ruins of temples, colonnades, hippodrome, theatre, and city walls.
