Allora il re mandò. — Ebr., E mandò. Con intenzioni ostili, come è dimostrato dal suo invio di soldati e dalle parole dell'angelo in 2 Re 1:15 . (Comp. 1 Re 18:8 ; 1 Re 22:26 , segg. )

Si sedette. — Era seduto. La LXX. ha "Elias era seduto", che è probabilmente originale.

A captain of fifty. — The army of Israel was organised by thousands, hundreds, and fifties, each of which had its “captain” (sar). (Comp. Numeri 31:14; Numeri 31:48; 1 Samuele 8:12.)

On the top of an hill. — Rather, the hill, i.e., above Samaria. Others think, Carmel, from 1 Re 18:42; 2 Re 2:25.

He spake. — LXX., “the captain of fifty spake.”

Thou man of God. — Heb., man of the god, i.e., the true God. (So in 2 Re 1:11; 2 Re 1:13, infra.)

Il re. — Nell'enfatico ebraico, come a dire, il potere del re è irresistibile, anche da parte di un uomo di Dio. Il vero Dio fu così insultato nella persona del suo profeta.

Scendere. — Oppure, prega scendi — in tono di cortesia ironica ( rçdâh ‚ precativo ).
