10-47 An account is given of David's worthies, the great men who served him. Yet David reckoned his success, not as from the mighty men that were with him, but from the mighty God, whose presence is all in all. In strengthening him, they strengthened themselves and their own interest, for his advancement was theirs. We shall gain by what we do in our places for the support of the kingdom of the Son of David; and those that are faithful to Him, shall find their names registered much more to their honour, than these are in the records of fame....

EXPOSITION 1 CHRONICLES 11:1 Upon the death of Saul, Abner, for a while espousing the cause of Ishbo-sheth, the only surviving son of Saul, "made him king over" a large proportion of the people, exclusive of Judah (2 Samuel 2:8). Already David had been anointed at Hebron by "the men of Judah, king over the house of Judah" (2 Samuel 2:1). DAVID LONGED, AND SAID, O THAT ONE WOULD GIVE ME DRINK, &C.— The 17th verse seems to contain, not barely David's longing for the water of Bethlehem, but his passionate wish to see his native town freed from the troops of the Philistines; and should be rendered, _David longed and said, who will give me to drink,_ &c.? The action of pouring out water before the Lord, was used with great solemnity; see 1 Samuel 7:6.; and here David seems, in consequence of that sacred custom, to have poured out the water which was thus unexpectedly brought him, 1 Chronicles 11:16 either by way of prayer that God would forgive his having thus undesignedly hazarded the lives of three of his bravest warriors, or else as an act of thanksgiving for their safe return.
