_AND IT CAME TO PASS, AS THE ARK OF THE COVENANT OF THE LORD CAME TO THE CITY OF DAVID, THAT MICHAL THE DAUGHTER OF SAUL LOOKING OUT AT A WINDOW SAW KING DAVID DANCING AND PLAYING: AND SHE DESPISED HIM IN HER HEART._ Michal ... saw ... David dancing and playing. His movements would be slow and measured, suitable to the grave and solemn character of the music. Though his royal robes were laid aside, he was attired like the other officials, showing a becoming humility in the immediate presence of God. The feelings manifested by Michal were only an ebullition of spleen from a proud and passionate woman....

25-29 It is good to notice the assistance of Divine Providence, even in things which fall within the compass of our natural powers; if God did not help us, we could not stir a step. If we do our religious duties in any degree aright, we must own it was God that helped us; had we been left to ourselves, we should have been guilty of some fatal errors. And every thing in which we engage, must be done in dependence on the mercy of God through the sacrifice of the Redeemer....

Verse 1 Chronicles 15:29. _MICHAL - SAW - DAVID DANCING - AND SHE DESPISED HIM_] See this whole business explained 2 Samuel 6:20, c., where David's conduct is vindicated, and the nature of Michal's disgrace and punishment hinted at, but all left to the reader's determination....

Of the palace, to see the procession, see 2 Samuel 6:16 where not only this circumstance is related, and the inward contempt she had David in, because of his behaviour, but also what she said, and what David returned in answer to it....

Then David said, None ought to carry the ark of God but the Levites: for them hath the LORD chosen to carry the ark of God; and to minister unto him for ever._ It should not be carried upon a new cart, dragged by unwilling oxen but it should be borne upon the cheerful shoulders of the God-appointed bearers, the Levites. 1 Chronicles 15:3. _And David gathered all Israel together to Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the LORD unto his place, which he had prepared for it. _looking out at a window saw_ R.V. LOOKED OUT AT THE WINDOW AND SAW. _playing_ a synonym of _dancing_, obsolete in modern English. The closest rendering is perhaps, LEAPING AS IN SPORT. The unrestrained joyousness of this action might easily degenerate (as in idolatrous worship) into licence. The Chronicler omits to say that the dancing was "before the Lord" (2 Samuel 6:16).
