_ALL THESE WERE UNDER THE HANDS OF THEIR FATHER FOR SONG IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD, WITH CYMBALS, PSALTERIES, AND HARPS, FOR THE SERVICE OF THE HOUSE OF GOD, ACCORDING TO THE KING'S ORDER TO ASAPH, JEDUTHUN, AND HEMAN._ All these were under the hands of their father. Asaph had four sons, Jeduthun six, and Heman fourteen, equal to twenty-four -making the musicians, with their brethren the singers, an amount of 288; for, like the priests and Levites, they were divided into twenty-four courses of twelve men each, equal to 288, who served a week in rotation; and these, half of whom officiated every week with a proportionate number of assistants, verse skillful and experienced musicians, capable of leading and instructing the general musical corps, which comprised no less than 4,000 (1 Chronicles 23:5)....

Instructed and directed by him in the performance of the service in the temple: WITH CYMBALS, PSALTERIES, AND HARPS, FOR THE SERVICE OF THE HOUSE OF GOD; which were the three principal instruments of music used in the temple service: ACCORDING TO THE KING'S ORDER, TO ASAPH, JEDUTHUN, AND HEMAN; who ordered and directed them what to sing, what tunes to make use of, and what instruments to play upon to those tunes....

4. THE SINGERS AND MUSICIANS OF THE TEMPLE CHAPTER 25 _ 1. Sons of Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman (1 Chronicles 25:1)_ 2. Their division by Lot into twenty-four (1 Chronicles 25:8) As we have seen before, Asaph, Jeduthun (Ethan) and Heman were the master leaders in song and music; their service was eminently spiritual, for we read “they should prophesy.” Heman especially is called the king's seer in the words of God. This is a significant expression. How much there is in what is termed “worship”, which has nothing whatever of the words of God in it. In most of the songs used in our times there is little of the words of God and many contain unscriptural and sentimental phrases. WHO SHOULD PROPHESY WITH HARPS...: according to the Chronicler the Temple musician ranked with the prophet; but he had authority for doing so, since it is evident from 1 Samuel 10:5 f. that the playing of musical instruments was associated with the prophetic office. In 2 Chronicles 20:14 it is said that the spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel, one of the sons of Asaph....
