There appear to have been carryings away of the people of Israel, the first by Pul (1 Chronicles 5:26), the second by Tiglath-pileser (1 Chronicles 5:6; 1 Chronicles 5:26), and the third by Shalmaneser (2 Kings 17:6; 2 Kings 18:11). Verse 1 Chronicles 5:6. _BEERAH HIS SON_] After their separation from the house of David the ten tribes continued to have princes of the tribes; and this continued till the time that Tiglath-pileser carried them captives into Assyria. At that time _Beerah_ was their _prince_ or _chief_; and with him this species of dominion or precedency terminated. According to the Targum, _Beerah_ was the same as Baruch the prophet....

EXPOSITION 1 CHRONICLES 5:1 THE SONS OF REUBEN. The tribe of Reuben is now taken third in order by the compiler, though Reuben was the first of all the sons of Israel. The distinct statements of 1 Chronicles 5:1 and 1 Chronicles 5:2, respecting the degradation of Reuben and his loss of the rights of primogeniture, are not to be understood, however, as mentioned in any way to account for his standing third here. That Judah takes in any genealogy the first place needs no other apology than that contained in this passage, "Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the chief ruler" (i.e.

CARRIED AWAY. This was the _first_ carrying away, and took place in 654. Compare 1 Chronicles 5:26. The _second_ was by Tiglath-Pileser (= Pul) in the reign of Pekah (649-629). This was the Galilee-Naphtali carrying away (2 Kings 15:29; Isaiah 9:1) referred to in Matthew 4:15. The _third_ was the Samaria deportation in the ninth year of Hoshea and sixth of Hezekiah (611 B. c), and ended the kingdom of Israel (2 Kings 17:3; 2 Kings 18:9). It was be

_Tilgath-pilneser_ called _Tiglath-pileser_(2 Kings 15:29), and no doubt identical with _Pul_(_ib._2 Kings 15:19). See F. Hommel in Hastings" _Bible Dict._, Assyria, p. 185. The Chronicler is therefore in error in speaking of Pul and Tilgath-pilneser as two persons; cp. 1 Chronicles 5:26....
