_(AND HIS DAUGHTER WAS SHERAH, WHO BUILT BETH-HORON THE NETHER, AND THE UPPER, AND UZZENSHERAH.)_ And his daughter was Sherah, who built Beth-horon the nether, and the upper, and Uzzen-sherah It is doubtful whether Sherah was the daughter of Ephraim or Beriah; most probably of the former, then consequently the sister of the latter. The names of women are never mentioned in these genealogical lists unless they were distinguished in some way; and Sherah is represented as the foundress of three cities, two of which were certainly existing at the time of the Israelite invasion of Canaan (Joshua 10:10); but how, or in what circumstances, she obtained a settlement and power in that country is unknown....

Verse 1 Chronicles 7:24. _HIS DAUGHTER_ WAS _SHERAH_] That is, _remnant_; "called so," says the Targum, "because she was the _remnant that escaped_ _from the slaughter_ mentioned above....

Sherah could scarcely herself have built the Palestinian cities here mentioned, which must belong to a time not earlier than Joshua. By “she built” we must understand “her descendants built.”...

EXPOSITION 1 CHRONICLES 7:1 The great tribes of Judah and Levi being now passed, as well as the minor ones of Simeon, Reuben, and Gad, we reach the SONS OF ISSACHAR. Issachar was Jacob's fifth son by Leah (Genesis 35:23). In the list of Genesis 46:13 our PUAH (פוּאָח) appears differently spelt as Phuvah (פֻוָּח), and JASHUB is found as Job, which is corrected by the Samaritan Codex to Jashub, and this reading the Septuagint follows. In the other parallel passage (Numbers 26:23) the Phuvah form obtains, but the other names are the same as her

AND HIS DAUGHTER WAS SHERAH,.... That is, the daughter of Beriah; not an immediate daughter, but a descendant of his, otherwise she could not have reached the times of Joshua, as she did by what follows: WHO BUILT BETHHORON THE NETHER, AND THE UPPER; which were cities on the border of the tribe of Ephraim; which the Israelites having taken from the Canaanites, and destroyed, she rebuilt, see Joshua 16:3 AND UZZENSHERAH; which was called after her own name, and to distinguish it from another place called Uzzen; though of neither of them do we read elsewhere....

The treatment of different tribes is unequal in this chapter. In the case of Issachar (1 Chronicles 7:1-5), Benjamin (1 Chronicles 7:6-12), and Asher (1 Chronicles 7:30-40), genealogies are given and the number of fighting-men of each tribe is stated. To Naphtali is devoted a single verse, giving only the names of his sons. For Manasseh and Ephraim genealogies are given and their possessions are shortly enumerated. The mention of Dan is obliterated, owing to the state of the text of 1 Chronicles 7:12....
