For they have refreshed my spirit and yours: therefore acknowledge ye them that are such. REFRESHED MY SPIRIT AND YOURS. "Yours" will be refreshed on receiving this letter, by knowing that 'my spirit is refreshed' by their having come to me; and (perhaps) by the good report they give of many of you (1 Corinthians 1:4; : cf. ). ACKNOWLEDGE YE THEM - by a kind reception (). "Know" them in their true worth, and treat them accordingly....

13-18 A Christian is always in danger, therefore should ever be on the watch. He should be fixed in the faith of the gospel, and never desert or give it up. By this faith alone he will be able to keep his ground in an hour of temptation. Christians should be careful that charity not only reigns in their hearts, but shines in their lives. There is a great difference between Christian firmness and feverish warmth and transport. The apostle gave particular directions as to some who served the cause of Christ among them. Those who serve the saints, those who desire the honour of the churches, and to remove reproaches from them, are to be thought much of, and loved. They should willingly acknowledge the worth of such, and all who laboured with or helped the apostle....

Verse 18. _THEY HAVE REFRESHED MY SPIRIT AND YOURS_] They have been a means of contributing greatly to my comfort; and what contributes to _my_ comfort must increase _yours_. This is probably the meaning of the apostle. _THEREFORE ACKNOWLEDGE YE THEM_] Pay them particular respect, and let all be held in esteem in proportion to their work and usefulness. When this is made the _rule_ of _respect_ and _esteem_, then _foolish and capricious attachments_ will have no place. A man will then be _honoured_ in proportion to his _merit_; and his merit will be estimated by his _usefulness_ among men....

The subject weighed much on St. Paul's mind. First, there was real need for their charity, for at Jerusalem there was as sharp a contrast between the lots of the rich and poor as there is in London, and the "poor saints," being the poorest of the poor (James 2:5), must have often been in deep distress. The collection for the Saints was to be taken on the first day of the week in connection with the remembrance of Him who had said, “it is more blessed to give than to receive.” He did not want to have any collections when he came, His presence might have influenced them in some way and he wanted to avoid this.
