1-9 The apostle tells the Corinthians that it was good, in that juncture of time, for Christians to keep themselves single. Yet he says that marriage, and the comforts of that state, are settled by Divine wisdom. Though none may break the law of God, yet that perfect rule leaves men at liberty to serve him in the way most suited to their powers and circumstances, of which others often are very unfit judges. All must determine for themselves, seeking counsel from God how they ought to act....

Verse 1 Corinthians 7:4. _THE WIFE HATH NOT POWER_, c.] Her person belongs to her husband her husband's person belongs to her: neither of them has any authority to refuse what the other has a matrimonial right to demand. The woman that would act so is either a knave or a fool. It would be trifling to attribute her conduct to any other cause than _weakness_ or _folly_. She does not love her husband; or she loves some one else better than her husband; or she makes pretensions to a fancied sanctity unsupported by Scripture or common sense....

THE WIFE HATH NOT POWER ... - By the marriage covenant that power, in this respect, is transferred to the husband, AND LIKEWISE, ALSO, THE HUSBAND - The equal rights of husband and wife, in the Scriptures, are everywhere maintained. 1 CORINTHIANS 7. PROBLEMS AS TO MARRIAGE, CELIBACY, AND DIVORCE. At this point Paul takes up a letter sent by the Corinthian church inviting his judgment on various questions, apparently indicating their own views with some self-satisfaction. The reply probably follows the order of the letter, not only as to the subjects in general, but the different branches of them. This explains the somewhat haphazard development of the subject in this chapter. (On the questions discussed, see p. 650.) The view put forward in the letter was that celibacy should be practised in the church. Such a view was not unnatural in a city so foul as Corinth. 1 CORINTHIANS 7:1.
