7-20 Whether we keep an account of God's mercies to us or not, he does; and he will set them in order before us, if we are ungrateful, to our greater confusion. EXPOSITION THE DEATH OF JEROBOAM'S SON.—The protest of the prophet of Judah, the signs which supported it, and above all the solemn visitation, with its strange portents, which straightway followed it, having alike failed to arrest Jeroboam (1 Kings 13:33) in his high-handed and shameless depravation of the true religion, we now read of the retribution which came upon his family, and which began with the sickness and death of his firstborn. We can hardly regard this as a part of the discipline designed to reform the king, and so avert the schism, for the narrative distinctly conveys the impression that Jeroboam's day of grace was past, and that judgment was already begun. VISIT OF JEROBOAM'S WIFE TO AHIJAH. Here we have an ancient story with Deuteronomic additions. According to the LXX (1 Kings 12:24 _g-m),_ Jeroboam sent his wife (Ano) to the prophet _before_ he became king. Ahijah foretells the child's death, and the ruin of Jeroboam's house, but gives no reason for either calamity. He is introduced as a new person, and he is not blind. Ano is not yet queen, so she has no need to disguise herself. As 1 Kings 14:7 in the Heb. is obviously Deuteronomic, probably the early story merely related that Ahijah foretold the death of Ahijah. In 1 Kings 15:25 Nadab reigned two years, and began in the second year of Asa, which was the twenty-first of Jeroboam, so that Nadab's two years fall within the time of his father's twenty-two. But from 2 Chronicles 13:20 we learn that Jeroboam was stricken with. languishing disease, in which time Nadab reigned with him, and died the same year as his father. The number "twentytwo" is associated with disorganization and disintegration (= 2x11). It is associated with the worst two reigns: Jeroboam, here; and Ahab in 1 Kings 16:29. _two and twenty years_ So that Jeroboam's death occurred in the second year of the reign of Asa, king of Judah. Cf. 1 Kings 15:9; 1 Kings 15:25. It appears from 2 Chronicles 13:20 to have been by some sudden visitation. -The Lord struck him, and he died." _Nadab his son_ We have only Abijah and Nadab mentioned of Jeroboam's family, but perhaps we may infer from the language of 1 Kings 15:29, that these were not the whole of his children....

CONCLUDING NOTE ON THE REIGN OF JEROBOAM 14:19-20 TRANSLATION (19) And the rest of the acts of Jeroboam how he fought and how he reigned, behold they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel. (20) And the length of Jeroboam's reign was twenty-two years, and he slept with his fathers, and his son Nadab ruled in his stead. COMMENTS In closing the account of Jeroboam, the historian mentions sources to which the reader of his book might turn for further information about this reign. Not much is said about the exploits of Jeroboam as the attention has been focused almost entirely on the sin which he committed. The full account of Jeroboam's reign was recorded in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel, which seems to have been a record of daily occurrences during this reign (1 Kings 14:19).
