DEATH OF DAVID; SOLOMON ESTABLISHED ON HIS THRONE. The main source of this chapter is the same as that of 1, but interspersed are Deuteronomic additions (1 Kings 2:3 f., 1 Kings 2:10; 1 Kings 2:27). The authenticity of David's advice to Solomon has been disputed, especially the reasons given for procuring Joab's execution. Judged by any standard it places his character in an unamiable light. There was not a great interval between the deposition of Abiathar and the building of the Temple, after which event the worship at Gibeon would cease. In the interval some deputy would fill Zadok's place there. In the LXX. there is found a long additional passage here, concerning Solomon's wisdom, his marriage with Pharaoh's daughter, his offerings and sacrifices, and his buildings. Then follows almost in the words of the earlier part of this chapter (1 Kings 2:8-9) David's charge concerning Shimei. The whole insertion seems confused and purposeless....

D. THE PLIGHT OF OTHER CONSPIRATORS 2:26-35 It would appear that Abiathar and Joab were again involved in the conspiracy to give the throne to Adonijah. At least this is the interpretation which Solomon put on their conduct. Thus it was in conjunction with the execution of Adonijah that Solomon (1) expelled Abiathar from the priesthood (1 Kings 2:26-27); and (2) executed Joab (1 Kings 2:28-35). _1.
