_AND WITHIN THE ORACLE HE MADE TWO CHERUBIMS OF OLIVE TREE, EACH TEN CUBITS HIGH._ Within the oracle he made two cherubim of olive tree. [The Septuagint (Alexandrine) has: xuloon kuparisinoon, cypress wood, overlaid with gold.] Josephus ('Antiquities.' b. 8:, ch. 3:, sec. 13) says they were of solid gold. EACH TEN CUBITS HIGH. [The Septuagint has: deka peecheoon megethos, the size of ten cubits.] Josephus represents the height of each of them as five cubits; probably, however, the error was not that of Josephus, but a transcriber. Layard ('Nineveh and Babylon,' p. 652) gives it as his opinion that what is called "gold" in these passages, as well as in the profane authors of antiquity, was really copper, alloyed with other metals-the aurichalcum, or orichalcum, of the Greeks-such as was used in the bowls and plates discovered at Nimroud....

In him dwells all the fulness of the Godhead; in him meet all God's spiritual Israel; through him we have access with confidence to God. 2. Every believer is a living temple, in whom the Spirit of God dwells, 1 Corinthians 3:16. This living temple is built upon Christ as its Foundation, and will be perfect in due time. 3. The gospel church is the mystical temple. It grows to a holy temple in the Lord, enriched and beautified with the gifts and graces of the Spirit. This temple is built firm, upon a Rock. 4. TWO CHERUBIMS - The pattern of the tabernacle was followed (marginal reference), but without servile imitation. The original cherubs were entirely of gold. These, being so much larger, were of wood, merely overlaid with a golden plating. The arrangement of the wings, and the direction of the faces, seem also to have been different. Moses’ cherubim “covered with their wings over the mercy seat;” Solomon’s stretched out theirs to the full 1 Kings 6:27, so that the four wings, each five cubits long 1 Kings 6:24, extended across the whole sanctuary, the width of which was twenty cubits 1 Kings 6:20. EXPOSITION SOLOMON'S TEMPLE.—The preparations for the building of the Temple having been related in the preceding chapter, the historian now proceeds to describe the edifice. He begins his narrative with a precise statement of the date of its erection (1 Kings 6:1); then follows (1) a description of the shape, size, and arrangement of the exterior (1 Kings 6:2), and (2) a detailed account of its internal fittings and adornments (1 Kings 6:15-11). DESCRIPTION OF SOLOMON'S TEMPLE. The Temple area is on the eastern hill of Jerusalem, which overlooks the valley of the Kidron, with the Mount of Olives on the opposite side. It was probably not the Zion captured by David (2 Samuel 5), but the site was purchased by him from Ornan, or Araunah, the Jebusite (2 Samuel 24:18). It is marked by an outcrop of rock, now called the _Sakrah._ The Temple hill is divided from the Upper City on the western hill by a valley called the Tyropœ an (cheese-makers). The Temple was part of a great scheme of building which has been restored by Stade, whose reconstruction is now generally adopted in descriptions of early Jerusalem. Of the Cherubim within the oracle (2 Chronicles 3:10-12) 23. _And within the oracle he made two cherubims_ As the Hebrew word is already in the plural form, write CHERUBIM. These cherubim were winged figures intended to represent some holy and heavenly form. They are first mentioned in Genesis 3:24, where some have thought that -the flame of a sword" spoken of in connexion with them implies that the cherubim were aimed with this weapon.
