_AND IT CAME TO PASS, WHEN SOLOMON HAD FINISHED THE BUILDING OF THE HOUSE OF THE LORD, AND THE KING'S HOUSE, AND ALL SOLOMON'S DESIRE WHICH HE WAS PLEASED TO DO,_ And it came to pass, when Solomon had finished. This first verse is connected with the eleventh, all that is contained between verses 210 being parenthetical....

1-9 God warned Solomon, now he had newly built and dedicated the temple, that he and his people might not be high-minded, but fear. After all the services we can perform, we stand upon the same terms with the Lord as before. Nothing can purchase for us liberty to sin, nor would the true believer desire such a licence. He would rather be chastened of the Lord, than be allowed to go on with ease and prosperity in sin....

CHAPTER IX _The Lord appears a second time to Solomon, and assures him that_ _he had heard his prayer; and that he would establish his_ _worship for ever in that temple, and him and his successors on_ _the throne of Israel, provided he and they would keep his_ _statutes and judgments_, 1-5; _but if they should transgress and forsake the Lord, then they_ _should be cast off, the temple itself abandoned, and their_ _enemies permitted to prevail over them_, 6-9. _Solomon having finished the temple and the king's house, about_ wh

EXPOSITION THE ANSWER TO SOLOMON'S PRAYER.—This chapter opens with an account of God's second appearance to Solomon. It must not be supposed, however, from the apparent close connexion of this relation with the preceding narrative, that it stands to it in equally close chronological order. It probably finds a place here because the historian has grouped together all the suitable materials in his possession which related to the temple. AND IT CAME TO PASS, WHEN SOLOMON HAD FINISHED THE BUILDING OF THE HOUSE OF THE LORD,.... Which was done in seven years, 1 Kings 6:38. AND THE KING'S HOUSE; his own palace, which was finished in thirteen years, 1 Kings 7:1, AND ALL SOLOMON'S DESIRE WHICH HE WAS PLEASED TO DO; all his other buildings, the house for Pharaoh's daughter, the house of the forest of Lebanon, and may include his vineyards, gardens, orchards, and pools of water, made for his pleasure, Ecclesiastes 2:4 in which he succeeded and prospered, 2 Chronicles 7:11....

The first few verses are a continuation of 1 Kings 8, and are likewise cast in a thoroughly Deuteronomic mould. Yahweh again appeared to the king and assured him of His protection. In 1 Kings 9:6 there is a sudden change from the singular thou and thee to the plural ye, as if Yahweh were addressing Israel, threatening, in case of disobedience, to destroy the Temple and make its ruins a warning of the punishment He inflicts on those who do not obey His laws. Thus the section about the Temple closes, and the rest of the chapter, devoted to the reign of Solomon, takes up the account in 1 Kings 9:5, and deals with his public work, his splendour, his sin, and the adversaries whom Yahweh raised up against him....

God's second appearance unto Solomon (2 Chronicles 7:11-22) 1. _when Solomon had finished_ We read (1 Kings 6:38) that Solomon was seven years in building the Temple, and in 1 Kings 7:1 that he was thirteen years building his own house. We find also below (in 1 Kings 9:9) that these periods were not reckoned concurrently, but that the whole period was twenty years. Hence arises a difficulty with regard to this second appearance of God to the king. From the words of God's message "I have heard thy prayer &c." ...
