11-23 Jonathan faithfully promises that he would let David know how he found his father affected towards him. It will be kindness to ourselves and to ours, to secure an interest in those whom God favours, and to make his friends ours. True friendship rests on a firm basis, and is able to silence ambition, self-love, and undue regard for others. But who can fully understand the love of Jesus, who gave himself as a sacrifice for rebellious, polluted sinners! how great then ought to be the force and effects of our love to him, to his cause, and his people!...

Verse 1 Samuel 20:12. _JONATHAN SAID - O LORD GOD OF ISRAEL_] There is, most evidently, something wanting in this verse. The _Septuagint_ has, _The Lord God of Israel doth KNOW_. The _Syriac_ and _Arabic, The_ _Lord God of Israel is WITNESS_. Either of these makes a good sense. But two of Dr. Kennicott's MSS. supply the word _chai_, "liveth;" and the text reads thus, _As the Lord God of Israel LIVETH, when I_ _have sounded my father - if there be good, and I then send not unto_ _thee, and show it thee, the Lord do so and much more to Jonathan_. This makes a still better sense....

JONATHAN SAID UNTO DAVID, O LORD GOD, &C.— Houbigant, after the Syriac, renders these verses thus: _Then Jonathan said unto David, The Lord God of Israel is witness, that I will sound my father to-morrow, and until the evening of the third day; and that if there be good towards David, I will send unto thee, and inform thee;_ 1 Samuel 20:13. _So may the Lord be gracious to Jonathan! If my father is determined that thou shouldst perish, I will shew that to thee,_ &c. It is plain, from the last words of the 13th verse, that Jonathan was no stranger to the rejection of Saul, and to the divine appointment of David to the crown. See ch. 1 Samuel 23:17....
