The alternative conditions here described have often been referred to as illustrating the doctrine of God's foreknowledge and pre-ordination of events. 7-13 Well might David complain of his enemies, that they rewarded him evil for good, and that for his love they were his adversaries. Christ was used thus basely. David applied to his great Protector for direction. No sooner was the ephod brought him than he made use of it. We have the Scriptures in our hands, let us take advice from them in doubtful cases. Verse 1 Samuel 23:11-9. In these verses we find the following questions and answers: - David said, _Will Saul come down to Keilah_? And the Lord said, _He will come down. In this short history we find an ample proof that there is such a thing as _contingency_ in human affairs; that is, God has poised many things between a possibility of being and not being, leaving it to the will of the creature to turn the scale. He had his lapses, but at heart he owned the Lord and wanted to glorify Him. Twice he asked the Lord; the second time evidently to quiet the fears of the six hundred men who were now with him. The treachery of the Keilites 7. _hath delivered him_ Lit. _hath rejected him and delivered him_. So blind was Saul as to imagine that it was not himself but David whom God had rejected. The Sept. reads "sold." _a town_, &c. A city. It may have been one of the old Canaanite fortresses (see on Joshua 11:13), or have been fortified as an outpost against the Philistines....
