1 Samuel 29:4

_AND THE PRINCES OF THE PHILISTINES WERE WROTH WITH HIM; AND THE PRINCES OF THE PHILISTINES SAID UNTO HIM, MAKE THIS FELLOW RETURN, THAT HE MAY GO AGAIN TO HIS PLACE WHICH THOU HAST APPOINTED HIM, AND LET HIM NOT GO DOWN WITH US TO BATTLE, LEST IN THE BATTLE HE BE AN ADVERSARY TO US: FOR WHEREWITH SHOULD HE RECONCILE HIMSELF UNTO HIS MASTER? SHOULD IT NOT BE WITH THE HEADS OF THESE MEN?_ The princes of the Philistines were wroth with him. It must be considered a happy circumstance in the overruling providence of God to rescue David out of the dangerous dilemma in which he was now placed. But David is not free from censure in his professions to Achish (1 Samuel 29:8) to do what is most probable he had not the smallest purpose of doing-of fighting with Achish against his enemies. It is just an instance of the unhappy consequences into which a false step-a departure from the

1-5 David waited with a secret hope that the Lord would help him out of his difficulty. But he seems to have been influenced too much by the fear of man, in consenting to attend Achish. It is hard to come near to the brink of sin, and not to fall in. God inclined the princes of the Philistines to oppose David's being employed in the battle. Thus their dislike befriended him, when no friend could do him such a kindness....

Verse 1 Samuel 29:4. _THE PRINCES OF THE PHILISTINES WERE WROTH_] It is strange that they had not yet heard of David's destruction of a village of the Geshurites, Gezrites, and Amalekites, 1 Samuel 27:8. Had they heard of this, they would have seen much more cause for suspicion....

With Achish, for giving such a character of David, and taking his part, in order to detain him, if possible: AND THE PRINCES OF THE PHILISTINES SAID UNTO HIM, MAKE THIS FELLOW RETURN; they speak of him with contempt, and insist on it that Achish order him to turn back, and go no further with them: THAT HE MAY GO AGAIN TO HIS PLACE WHICH THOU HAST APPOINTED HIM; to Ziklag, the place that Achish had given him for his residence, 1 Samuel 27:6; they did not desire to have him sent to his own country, and to Saul, since should a reconciliation be made between them, he would be of great service to Saul against them: AND LET HIM NOT GO DOWN WITH US TO BATTLE; into the valley of Jezreel, where the Israelites had pitched: lest in the battle he be an adversary to us

8. DAVID AND ACHISH AND ZIKLAG DESTROYED AND AVENGED CHAPTER 29 _ 1. The objections of the Philistine lords (1 Samuel 29:1)_ 2. Achish dismisses David (1 Samuel 29:6) While David's enemy, Saul, heard his coming doom, David was still with the enemies of God's people. The Philistines were gathered against Israel and David was with Achish ready to fight against the Lord's people. The lords of the Philistines however object to his presence. They still remember the song of bygone days and fear treachery. Then follows the description of how Achish and David parted. David's words expressing his great willingness to stay with the enemies of God show how deep a believer may fall when he has wandered away from God. He calls wicked Achish “my lord the King” and his own people Israel,
