CHAPTER XIII _Abijah begins to reign over Judah, and has war with Jeroboam,_ 1-3. _His speech from Mount Zemaraim to Jeroboam, before the_ _commencement of hostilities_, 4-12. _While thus engaged, Jeroboam despatches some troops which come_ _on the rear of Abijah's army_, 13. _Perceiving this, they cry unto the Lord, and the Israelites are_ _defeated with the loss of_ five hundred thousand _men_, 14-18. _Abijah retakes several cities from Jeroboam, who is smitten by_ _the Lord, and dies_, 19, 20....

EXPOSITION The career of _Abijah _begins and ends with this chapter, the twenty-one verses of which are paralleled by only eight in 1 Kings 15:1. The difference is caused by the fact that the writer of Kings only mentions that there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam, while the writer of Chronicles, besides giving particulars of the war, rehearses the splendid, dramatic, rhetorical address and appeal of Abijah on Mount Zemaraim to the people of the ten tribes. 2 CHRONICLES 13:1 IN THE EIGHTEENTH YEAR.
