Verse 2 Chronicles 24:27. _THE GREATNESS OF THE BURDENS_ LAID _UPON HIM_] Meaning, probably, the heavy tribute laid upon him by the Syrians; though some think the vast sums amassed for the repairs of the temple are here intended. _WRITTEN IN THE STORY_] מדרש _midrash_, the _commentary_, of the book of Kings. We have met with this before; but these works are all lost, except the extracts found in Kings, Chronicles, and Ezra. These _abridgments_ were the cause of the neglect, and finally of the destruction, of the originals. This has been often the case in works of great consequence. _Trogus Pompeius_ wrote a general history of the world, which he brought down to the reign of Augustus, in _forty-four_ volumes. Joash as king; his restoration of the Temple. There are some significant points of difference between this account and that of 2 K. According to the latter, the house of God having fallen into disrepair, Joash commands that certain dues and free-will offerings of the people are to be utilised by the priests for undertaking the repairs; the priests, however, while taking the money, do nothing for the repair of the Temple. As the result of a protest against this on the part of the king, the priests promise not to receive any more money from the people; but they refuse to repair the Temple. Thereupon Jehoiada, presumably at the command of the king, places a chest beside the altar into which the worshippers cast their gifts.
