_AND TO THE GENEALOGY OF ALL THEIR LITTLE ONES, THEIR WIVES, AND THEIR SONS, AND THEIR DAUGHTERS, THROUGH ALL THE CONGREGATION: FOR IN THEIR SET OFFICE THEY SANCTIFIED THEMSELVES IN HOLINESS:_ For in their set office they sanctified themselves. This is the reason assigned for providing for the wives and children out of the revenues of the sanctuary-that priests, withdrawing from those secular pursuits by which they might have maintained their households, devoted themselves entirely to the functions of the ministry....

EXPOSITION This chapter, after its first verse (which holds an intermediate place with relation to the enthusiastic devoutness of the people recorded in the last verse of the former chapter, and what now followed of the doings of the king), tells how Hezekiah once more settles, first, the courses of the priests and Levites, and the offerings for their support (2 Chronicles 31:2); and, secondly, both the offices and officers needful for rightly attending to the business. The Book of Kings gives us no parallel to this chapter. 2 CHRONICLES 31:1 As much as the last verse of the foregoing chapter was all of the religious fervour of the occasion, this verse is all of the, practical honest work of the people and their leaders. These were all genealogized and registered, wives and children, sons and daughters, whether small or grown up; and a portion was distributed to them according to their number, greater or lesser: FOR IN THEIR SET OFFICE THEY SANCTIFIED THEMSELVES IN HOLINESS; which is to be understood either of the overseers, who, in their set office, faithfully distributed the holy things to the persons before described; or else to the priests, and Levites, to whom, and to whose families, the distribution was made, because they wholly devoted themselves to the holy service of God....

CHAPTER 31 THE RESULTS OF THE REVIVAL _ 1. The destruction of the false worship (2 Chronicles 31:1)_ 2. The king's appointments (2 Chronicles 31:2) All was done by Hezekiah for the orderly continuance of the service in the house of the LORD. The order of the courses of the priests, after David's arrangement, which had been abandoned during the preceding apostasy, was once more settled. The connexion of 2 Chronicles 31:15-18 is difficult to trace and the text is perhaps faulty. Assuming however the general correctness of the text, we may regard 2 Chronicles 31:16-17 as a parenthesis stating that the ministration of Eden and his colleagues did not extend to those priests and Levites and male children of the priests who presented themselves in person at the Temple. _in their set office_ R.V. mg.
