_AND THEY ROASTED THE PASSOVER WITH FIRE ACCORDING TO THE ORDINANCE: BUT THE OTHER HOLY OFFERINGS SOD THEY IN POTS, AND IN CALDRONS, AND IN PANS, AND DIVIDED THEM SPEEDILY AMONG ALL THE PEOPLE._ They roasted the Passover - (see Exodus 12:7.) This mode of preparation was prescribed by the law exclusively for the paschal lamb; the other offerings and thank offerings were cooked in pots, kettles, and pans (1 Samuel 2:14). The haste was either owing to the multiplicity of the priests' business, or because the best and flavour of the viands would have been otherwise diminished. God alone can truly make our hearts holy, and prepare them for his holy services; but there are duties belonging to us, in doing which we obtain this blessing from the Lord....

See notes on 2 Kings 22, 2 Kings 23:1, which form the basis of the Chronicler's account; but he has made many alterations in accordance with his general tendencies. One important difference between the two accounts is that, according to the Chronicler, Josiah's Reformation takes place before the finding of the book of the Law, an obviously illogical sequence; but the Chronicler desires to emphasize Josiah's piety even in his tender years.
