2 Chronicles 8:11

_AND SOLOMON BROUGHT UP THE DAUGHTER OF PHARAOH OUT OF THE CITY OF DAVID UNTO THE HOUSE THAT HE HAD BUILT FOR HER: FOR HE SAID, MY WIFE SHALL NOT DWELL IN THE HOUSE OF DAVID KING OF ISRAEL, BECAUSE THE PLACES ARE HOLY, WHEREUNTO THE ARK OF THE LORD HATH COME._ Solomon brought up the daughter of Pharaoh out of the city of David. On his marriage with the Egyptian princess at the beginning of his reign, he assigned her a temporary abode in the city of David - i:e., Jerusalem-until a suitable palace for his wife had been erected. While that palace was in progress, he himself lodged in the palace of David, but he did not allow her to occupy it, because he felt that, she being a pagan proselyte, and having brought from her own country an establishment of pagan maid-servants, there would have been an impropriety in her being domiciled in a mansion which was, or had been, hallowed by the recept...

Verse 2 Chronicles 8:11. _THE DAUGHTER OF PHARAOH_] "And Bithiah, the daughter of Pharaoh, Solomon brought up from the city of David to the palace which he had built for her." - _T_. _BECAUSE_ THE PLACES ARE _HOLY_] Is not this a proof that he considered his wife to be a _heathen_, and not proper to dwell in a place which had been sanctified? Solomon had not yet departed from the true God....

OF PHARAOH - Here again the writer of Chronicles assumes in his reader a knowledge of the facts recorded in the marginal references...

EXPOSITION This interesting historical chapter may very well be described as by Professor Dr. James G. Murphy, in his 'Bible-Class Handbook,' "The Acts of Solomon," or at any rate, some of the miscellaneous acts, for which time was found now that the "two houses" were out of hand. 2 CHRONICLES 8:1 (parallel, 1 Kings 9:10).—TwEnty YEARS, WHEREIN SOLOMON HAD BUILT THE HOUSE OF THE LORD, AND HIS OWN HOUSE. The description is intended to be, what it is, chronologically exact. Four years of Solomon had passed when he began the Lord's house, seven were spent in building it, thirteen in finishing and furnishing it, and in building, finishing, and furnishing the king's house—in all twenty-four years....

SOLOMON'S VARIOUS RELIGIOUS AND SECULAR UNDERTAKINGS (see notes on 1 Kings 9:10). A striking difference occurs between 2 and 1 Kings 9:11; here Hiram gives Solomon an unspecified number of cities, whereas in the historical account Solomon gives Hiram twenty cities. The discrepancy is not difficult to account for; in the Chronicler's days when, with the lapse of time, the popular conception had greatly increased the wealth and power of Solomon, it was not thought credible that such a monarch could really have ceded Israelite cities to a heathen in lieu of payment. This is not to say that the Chronicler deliberately falsified history; the sources from which he compiled his record were various, and upon these the influence of tradition is not likely to have been without effect; moreover, the authority of the

In 1 Kings 3:1 it is said simply that Solomon brought Pharaoh's daughter into the city of David until his own house was finished. _My wife shall not dwell_ Render, NO WIFE OF MINE SHALL DWELL....
