Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you. 11._Finally, brethren _He qualifies whatever there has been of sharpness throughout the whole of the epistle, as he did not wish to leave their minds in an exasperated state, (971) but rather to soothe them. For _then _only are reproofs beneficial, when they are in a manner seasoned with honey, that the hearer may, if possible, receive them in an agreeable spirit. At the same time, he appears to turn from a few diseased persons (972) to the entire Church. Hence he declares_, _that he aims at promoting its _perfection, _and desires its consolation. To _be of one mind, _and to _live in peace, _are expressions which mean two different things; for the one takes its rise from the other. The _former _relates to agreement of sentiment; the _latter _denotes benevolence, and union of hearts. _And the God of peace _This he adds, that

All that _remains_ for me now to write is, to wish you all manner of happiness, and so to take my leave. _FAREWELL._] A good wish, from our old mother tongue, compounded of [Anglo-Saxon], _to go_, and [Anglo-Saxon], _fairly, properly_, or [Anglo-Saxon], with _felicity; go on prosperously_! This is the spirit of this good wish. He speaks in conclusion of his coming to them. “This third time I am coming to you.” And when he comes again he will not spare them. He reminds them once more of their doubtings about Christ speaking in him and using him as an apostle. They themselves were proof of this. If it were that Christ had not spoken to them through him (by preaching the Gospel), then Christ also did not dwell in them. But if Christ really was in them then it was an evidence that Christ had spoken by him. Notice that part of the third verse and the fourth verse are parenthetical.
