Verse 2 John 1:9. _WHOSOEVER TRANSGRESSETH_] παραβαινων. He who _passes_ over the sacred enclosure, or _goes beyond_ the prescribed limits; _and abideth not in the doctrine_-does not remain _within_ these _holy_ _limits_, but indulges himself either in excesses of _action_ or _passion; hath not God_ for his Father, nor the love of God in his heart. _HATH BOTH THE FATHER AND THE SON._] He who abideth in the doctrine of Christ, his body is a temple of the Holy Trinity, and he has communion with the Father as his Father, and _with the Son_ as his Saviour and _Redeemer_....

WHOSOEVER TRANSGRESSETH, AND ABIDETH NOT IN THE DOCTRINE OF CHRIST, HATH NOT GOD - In the doctrine which Christ taught, or the true doctrine respecting him. The language is somewhat ambiguous, like the phrase “the love of Christ,” which may mean either his love to us, or our love to him. Compare John 15:9. It is difficult to determine here which is the true sense - whether it means the doctrine or precepts which he taught, or the true doctrine respecting him. Macknight understands by it the doctrine taught by Christ and his apostles. It would seem most probable that this is the sense of the passage, but then it would include, of course, all that Christ taught respecting himself, as well as his other instructions. VER. 2 JOHN 1:9 didach|/ (2) {A} After the second didach|/ the Textus Receptus, following K L P most minuscules copbo eth, adds tou/ Cristou/. This reading is obviously secondary, the result of scribal assimilation to the first part of the sentence. Likewise didach|/ auvtou/, read by certain versional and patristic witnesses (syrph, h with * Lucifer), originated from a similar desire to relate the two clauses more closely. THE SECOND EPISTLE The Second Epistle is addressed by the elder unto the elect lady and her children. The word elder has the same meaning as it has in 1 Peter 5:1. Some take it that the elect lady means an assembly, and her children the members of the assembly. But this is a very strained application. The word “Kyria” (lady) excludes this meaning, besides other reasons which we do not follow here. She was a Christian woman of note generally known and beloved, having children, whom the apostle had found walking in the truth. She had also a sister with children, who seems to have been in the same place where the apostle was, probably in Ephesus. This is indicated by the last verse of the Epistle, “The children of thy elect sister greet thee.” The keynote of this message to the elect lady, unknown by name, is the word “truth.” The apostle lets them know that he loves them, as well as

EXHORTATION AND WARNING. The commandment of love given by Christ to His Church from the beginning must be faithfully observed. Loyalty to Christ meant that His followers must beware of the false teachers, the embodiment of Antichrist, who denied the reality of His Incarnation. Ground already won for the faith might be lost. Those who, under the lure of advanced thought, sought to beguile others from Christ's teaching, were not Christians, and must receive neither countenance nor hospitality. 2 JOHN 1:4.
