_AND HE SAID, COME WITH ME, AND SEE MY ZEAL FOR THE LORD. SO THEY MADE HIM RIDE IN HIS CHARIOT._ He said, Come ... and see my zeal for the Lord. It was Jehu's policy, by extirpating the Baal idolatry, to re-establish the calf-symbols; and he boasts of making him by such a course a zealot for the honour of Yahweh. This is a confirmation of what was said respecting Jeroboam's innovation (see the notes at 1 Kings 12:28), that 'the defection of Israel did not consist in rejecting Yahweh as a false god, or in renouncing the law of Moses as a false religion, but in joining foreign worship and idolatrous ceremonies, to the ritual of the true God' (Warburton, 'Divine Legation,' b. 5:, sec. 3)....

15-28 Is thine heart right? This is a question we should often put to ourselves. I make a fair profession, have gained a reputation among men, but, is my heart right? Am I sincere with God? Jehonadab owned Jehu in the work, both of revenge and of reformation. An upright heart approves itself to God, and seeks no more than his acceptance; but if we aim at the applause of men, we are upon a false foundation. Whether Jehu looked any further we cannot judge. The law of God was express, that idolaters were to be put to death. Thus idolatry was abolished for the present out of Israel. May we desire that it be rooted out of our hearts....

Verse 2 Kings 10:16. _COME WITH ME, AND SEE MY ZEAL FOR THE LORD._] O thou ostentatious and murderous hypocrite! Thou have zeal for Jehovah and his pure religion! Witness thy calves at Dan and Bethel, and the general profligacy of thy conduct. He who can call another to witness his zeal for religion, or his works of charity, has as much of both as serves his _own_ turn....

DESTRUCTION OF THE HOUSE OF AHAB AND OF THE BAAL WORSHIPPERS. The same source is continued, but 2 Kings 10:28 are from a Deuteronomist. The whole story is one of the most terrible in the OT, Ahab had a large family in Samaria. Jehu with a sort of rude chivalry invited the elders of the city to choose one of them as king, and to fight for the throne. But the cowardly rulers promised submission, and at Jehu's command sent the heads of the seventy sons to Jezreel in baskets (2 Kings 10:7). _see my zeal for the Lord_ This was the boast of a man who did not know his own heart. He had some zeal and manifested it in the destruction of Baal, but stopped short at the suppression of the calves in Dan and Bethel. Josephus makes Jehu invite Jonadab to be witness -how he will spare no wicked man, but will destroy both the false prophets and the false priests and those who lead the multitude astray so that they leave the worship of the Most High, and adore strange gods: for it is a most honest and pleasing sight for a good and righteous man to see the wicked being punished"....

DISCOURSE: 372 TRUE AND FALSE ZEAL 2 Kings 10:16. _Come with me, and see my zeal for the Lord._ UNGODLY men, though they will not follow the example of the godly, are glad to have their sanction and approbation in what they do. Jehu was indeed acting at this time under a divine commission. The work in which he was engaged, was that of extirpating the whole house and family of Ahab: and, terrible as it was, he did right to execute it, because he acted under a divine command [Note: 2 Kings 9:7.].
