_AND THEY GAVE THE MONEY, BEING TOLD, INTO THE HANDS OF THEM THAT DID THE WORK, THAT HAD THE OVERSIGHT OF THE HOUSE OF THE LORD: AND THEY LAID IT OUT TO THE CARPENTERS AND BUILDERS, THAT WROUGHT UPON THE HOUSE OF THE LORD,_ They gave the money, being told, into the hands of them that did the work. The king set his secretary, along with an agent of the high priest (2 Chronicles 24:11), to count the money in the chest from time to time, and deliver the amount to the overseers of the building, who paid the workmen and purchased all necessary materials. The custom of putting sums of sums of certain amount in bags, which are labelled and sealed by a proper officer, is a common way of using the currency in Turkey and other Eastern countries....

1-16 It is a great mercy to young people, especially to all young men of rank, like Jehoash, to have those about them who will instruct them to do what is right in the sight of the Lord; and they do wisely and well for themselves, when willing to be counselled and ruled. The temple was out of repair; Jehoash orders the repair of the temple. The king was zealous. God requires those who have power, to use it for the support of religion, the redress of grievances, and repairing of decays. Who were appointed overseers of the workmen employed in the repairs of the temple; which overseers were laymen, and not priests, they being discharged from any concern in the repairs: this money "told", Kimchi interprets of its being coined; he supposes money coined and uncoined to be brought, which was put in separate bags; and that, which was not coined, they coined it before they delivered it to the overseers to pay the workmen with: AND THEY LAID IT OUT TO THE CARPENTERS AND BUILDERS THAT WROUGHT UPON THE HOUSE OF THE LORD; paid them with it, some that wrought in cutting the timber, and others in building with it....

2 KINGS 12. REIGN OF JOASH AND HIS REPAIR OF THE TEMPLE. 2 Kings 12:1 is in the usual annalistic style of the Deuteronomist. It is followed by a curious extract from the Temple records (2 Kings 12:4 ff.), similar to those found in 2 Kings 16:10 and 2 Kings 22:3 to 2 Kings 23:24. This relates to the provision of money for the repair of the Temple. Two things deserve attention (2 Kings 12:4). The first is that the sources of the Temple revenue are given as ...

_they gave the money, being told_ R.V. THAT WAS WEIGHED OUT. Here by employing a different word the writer makes plain what was meant by the previous -telling" or -counting". The Chronicler adds that when this was done, the chest was carried back to its place, and that they did this from day to day, i.e. from time to time, and gathered money in abundance. _into the hands of_them _that did the work_ Explained by the following clause as -the overseers", the chief men who had charge of the restoration. The priests and the king's officer did not pay the workmen, but gave sums in gross over to the contractors. _and they laid_[R.V. PAID] _it out to the carpenters and_[R.V. AND THE] _builders_ Both nouns are defined, as are also - THE masons and THE hewers of stone" in the next verse. R.V. inserts the article there also....

B. THE REIGN OF JOASH IN JUDAH 11:21-12:21 Like so many of the Hebrew monarchs, Joash got off to a great start. As long as his protector and adviser Jehoiada was living, the young king pursued the right course. But when the old priest died, Joash fell into the snare of pride and apostasy. After a brief introductory note (2 Kings 11:21 to 2 Kings 12:3), the author discusses at length the major accomplishment of the reign of Joash, the repair of the Temple (2 Kings 12:4-16).
