This bold and haughty challenge, which was most probably stimulated by a desire of satisfaction for the outrages perpetrated by the discharged auxiliaries of Israel (2 Chronicles 25:13) on the towns that lay on their way home, as well as by revenge for the massacre of his ancestors by Jehu (2 Kings 9:1), sprang, there is little doubt, from pride and self-confidence, inspired by his victory over the Edomites. 8-14 For some time after the division of the kingdoms, Judah suffered much from the enmity of Israel. After Asa's time, it suffered more by the friendship of Israel, and by the alliance made with them. Now we meet with hostility between them again. How may a humble man smile to hear two proud and scornful men set their wits on work, to vilify and undervalue one another! Unholy success excites pride; pride excites contentions. The effects of pride in others, are insufferable to those who are proud themselves. These are the sources of trouble and sin in private life; but when they arise between princes, they become the misery of their whole kingdoms. Verse 2 Kings 14:8. _COME, LET US LOOK ONE ANOTHER IN THE FACE._] This was a real declaration of war; and the ground of it is most evident from this circumstance: that the _one hundred thousand_ men of Israel that had been dismissed, though they had the _stipulated money_, taking the advantage of Amaziah's absence, fell upon the _cities of_ _Judah, from Samaria to Beth-horon, and smote three thousand men,_ _and took much spoil_, 2 Chronicles 25:10. Amaziah no doubt remonstrated with Jehoash, but to no purpose; and therefore he declared war against him....

Amaziah’s success against Edom had so elated him that he thought himself more than a match for his northern neighbor. This is the judgment of the Deuteronomist, who refers to the law-book of his age, approving the king's forbearance in not punishing the sons of his father's murderers (Deuteronomy 21:1 *, Deuteronomy 24:16). Amaziah was successful in his wars with Edom, whose territory was peculiarly important to Judah as giving access to the Red Sea.
