17-20 Ahaz put contempt upon the sabbath, and thus opened a wide inlet to all manner of sin. This he did for the king of Assyria. When those who have had a ready passage to the house of the Lord, turn it another way to please their neighbours, they are going down-hill apace to ruin....

Verse 2 Kings 16:20. _WAS BURIED WITH HIS FATHERS IN THE CITY OF DAVID_] But it is expressly declared, 2 Chronicles 28:27, that _he was not buried in the sepulchres of the kings of Israel_; and this was undoubtedly intended as a mark of _degradation_. His reign was _disastrous_ and _impious_; and it was _disastrous_ because it was _impious_. He had been a _scourge_, not a _blessing_, to his people. 2 KINGS 16. REIGN OF AHAZ. This chapter is assigned to different sources, and deals mainly with the king's alteration of the Temple, though it alludes to his apostasy and his wars. The Temple record (2 Kings 16:10) may be compared to similar passages in 2 K._ e.g._ 2 Kings 11, 2 Kings 12:4 ff. The verdict on Ahaz is more unfavourable than on any king of Judah except Manasseh. 2 KINGS 16:1. AHAZ. The full name was _Yehoahaz,_ and it appears in almost this form in an inscription of Tiglath-pileser. The king mentioned in 2 Kings 23:31 is properly Jehoahaz II....
