Hezekiah was the last man to have stripped the temple doors if there had been any other way of raising what was demanded. He had been rejoiced at the purification and adornment of the temple, and must have been very hard driven ere he consented to undo the work which he had so lately done. Josephus adds to the history (_Ant._x. 1. 1) a link which may explain the events which follow in the next section. II. A POLITICAL CRISIS: THE ASSYRIAN INVASION OF 701 B.C. 18:13-19:37 In 701 B.C. the Assyrian king Sennacherib was able to turn his attention to the rebellious vassal in Jerusalem. It is not easy to correlate all the details of this section with Sennacherib's own account of the campaign. Some scholars feel that in 2 Kings 18:13 to 2 Kings 19:37 _two_ Assyrian attacks against Jerusalem have been combined without the slightest indication of the time interval of some twenty years between them.[601] However, it is probably best to follow those scholars who assign all the data here given to the 701 B.C. invasion.
