_AMON WAS TWENTY AND TWO YEARS OLD WHEN HE BEGAN TO REIGN, AND HE REIGNED TWO YEARS IN JERUSALEM. AND HIS MOTHER'S NAME WAS MESHULLEMETH, THE DAUGHTER OF HARUZ OF JOTBAH._ Amon was twenty and two years old when he began to reign. Manasseh, having ascended the throne of Judah at 12 years of age and reigned 55 years in Jerusalem (2 Kings 21:1; cf. 2 Chronicles 33:1), was 67 years old at his death; so that, as Amon, when he succeeded his father, was 22 years of age, his birth must have taken place in his father's 45th year. 19-26 Amon profaned God's house with his idols; and God suffered his house to be polluted with his blood. How unrighteous soever they were that did it, God was righteous who suffered it to be done. Now was a happy change from one of the worst, to one of the best of the kings of Judah. Once more Judah was tried with a reformation. Whether the Lord bears long with presumptuous offenders, or speedily cuts them off in their sins, all must perish who persist in refusing to walk in his ways....

Verse 2 Kings 21:19. _HE REIGNED TWO YEARS IN JERUSALEM._] The remark of the rabbins is not wholly without foundation, that the sons of those kings who were idolaters, and who succeeded their fathers, seldom reigned more than _two_ years. So _Nadab_, the son of Jeroboam, 1 Kings 15:25; _Elah_, the son of Baasha, 1 Kings 16:8; _Ahaziah_, the son of Ahab, 1 Kings 22:51; and _Amon_, the son of Manasseh, as mentioned here, 2 Kings 21:19....

EXPOSITION 2 KINGS 21:1 THE REIGNS OF MANASSEH AND AMON. 2 KINGS 21:1 THE REIGN OF MANASSEH. Hezekiah's good and glorious reign was followed by one of exactly the opposite character. His son and successor, Manasseh, reversed Hezekiah's entire religious policy, and returned to the wicked practices of his grandfather Ahaz. In verses 3-9 and verse 16 his various abominations are enumerated, while in verses 10-15 God's sentence is pronounced upon them. The account of his reign terminates with a brief summary (verses 17, 18)....

Being born in the forty fifth of his father's life, and in the thirty third of his reign: AND HE REIGNED TWO YEARS IN JERUSALEM; which, as Abarbinel observes, was the usual time the sons of wicked kings reigned, and instances in the son of Jeroboam, Baasha, and Ahab, 1 Kings 15:25. An Arabic writer k says, he reigned twelve years, but according to the Jews only two: AND HIS MOTHER'S NAME WAS MESHULLEMETH, THE DAUGHTER OF HARUZ OF JOTBAH; there was a place called Jotbath, which was one of the stations of the children of Israel in the wilderness, Numbers 33:33 but it can scarcely be thought to be the same place. k Abulpharag. REIGNS OF MANASSEH AND AMON. The fact that the reformation begun by Hezekiah was so thoroughly undone at his death, and that his son was able to reign undisturbed for fifty-five years, proves that his reforms were only superficial and could not have been popular. The thoroughly Deuteronomic tone of this chapter is very noticeable. The idolatry of Manasseh is specially condemned in Deuteronomy 4:19; Deuteronomy 17:13; Deuteronomy 18:10 f. Amon king of Judah. His wicked reign and death (2 Chronicles 33:21-25) 19. _Jotbah_ This place is not mentioned elsewhere in the Bible. It is generally thought to be the same as _Jotbath_or _Jotbathah_, mentioned (Numbers 33:33; Deuteronomy 10:7) as a station of the Israelites in their wanderings. It is called -a land of torrents of water", so that it would be most likely a sort of oasis in the desert....

(21) And he walked in all the ways in which his father had walked, and he served the idols which his father had served, and he worshiped them.
