One would not have believed it possible, that in Judah, where God was known, in Israel, where his name was great, in Salem, in Zion, where his dwelling-place was, such abominations should be found. Josiah had reigned eighteen years, and had himself set the people a good example, and kept up religion according to the Divine law; yet, when he came to search for idolatry, the depth and extent were very great. Both common history, and the records of God's word, teach, that all the real godliness or goodness ever found on earth, is derived from the new-creating Spirit of Jesus Christ....

Verse 2 Kings 23:13. _MOUNT OF CORRUPTION_] This, says _Jarchi_, following the _Chaldee_, was the mount of _Olives_, for this is the mount המשחה _hammishchah_, of _unction_; but because of the idolatrous purposes for which it was used, the Scripture changed the appellation to the _mount_ המשחית hammashchith, of corruption. _ASHTORETH THE ABOMINATION, C._] See on 1 Kings 11:7....

2 KINGS 23:3. BY THE PILLAR. COVENANT: for the word pillar see 2 Kings 11:14 and 1 Kings 7:21. In the latter passage it is used for the two great brazen pillars set up by Solomon before the porch of the Temple. In making the covenant the king takes the lead.
