2 Kings 24:2

_AND THE LORD SENT AGAINST HIM BANDS OF THE CHALDEES, AND BANDS OF THE SYRIANS, AND BANDS OF THE MOABITES, AND BANDS OF THE CHILDREN OF AMMON, AND SENT THEM AGAINST JUDAH TO DESTROY IT, ACCORDING TO_ _ THE WORD OF THE LORD, WHICH HE SPAKE BY HIS SERVANTS THE PROPHETS._ The Lord sent against him bands of the Chaldees, х_ KASDIYM_ (H3778)]. This is either a new race or the same people under a different name who supplanted the Assyrians and Babylonians. They appear in Scripture in three different states-first, as nomad tribes (Job 1:17; Jeremiah 40:10); secondly, as a priestly caste, men of science so-called, such as astrology and divination (Daniel 2:1); and third

1-7 If Jehoiakim had served the Lord, he had not been servant to Nebuchadnezzar. If he had been content with his servitude, and true to his word, his condition had been no worse; but, rebelling against Babylon, he plunged himself into more trouble. See what need nations have to lament the sins of their fathers, lest they smart for them. Threatenings will be fulfilled as certainly as promises, if the sinner's repentance prevent not....

See the marginal references. Instead of coming up in person Nebuchadnezzar sent against Jehoiakim his own troops and those of the neighboring nations. 2 KINGS 23:36 TO 2 KINGS 24:7. JEHOIAKIM. A fuller account of the reign is given by Jeremiah, who consistently opposed the king (see Jeremiah 25-27, 35 f., and especially 2 Kings 22:13). The external events of the time are as follows (p. 60). The Assyrian empire came to an end with the fall of Nineveh, about 606 B.C. In 605 B.C. the Egyptians were utterly defeated and driven out of Syria after the battle of Carchemish (Jeremiah 46:2; see 2 Kings 24:7). _And the Lord sent against him bands of the Chaldees_ R.V. CHALDÆANS. The bands were irregular marauding parties which were allowed, perhaps encouraged, to overrun the country of the rebellious vassal before the great king could put his trained force in motion. These marauders did not consist only of Babylonians (Chaldæans) but comprised also bodies from the surrounding people, Syria, Moab and Ammon, whom Nebuchadnezzar had compelled to acknowledge the supremacy of Babylon in the same way as Judah had done. On this mixed army of assailants cf. Jeremiah 25:9. _according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by_[R.V. BY THE HAND OF] _his servants the prophets_ Much more stress is laid in Kings on the judgement being Jehovah's work than in Chronicles. - _The Lord_sent the bands", they came -according to the _Lord's word_" and -at _His_commandment".

III. THE REIGN AND REBELLION OF JEHOIAKIM 23:36-24:7 TRANSLATION (36) Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And the name of his mother was Zebudah the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah. (37) And he did evil in the eyes of the LORD according to all which his fathers had done. (1) In his days, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his vassal three years; then he turned away and rebelled against him. (2) And the LORD sent against him bands of Chaldeans and bands of Arameans and bands of Moabites and bands of the children of Ammon, and sent them against Judah to destroy it according to the word of the LORD which He spoke by the hand of His servants the prophets.
