2 Kings 25:1

_AND IT CAME TO PASS IN THE NINTH YEAR OF HIS REIGN, IN THE TENTH MONTH, IN THE TENTH DAY OF THE MONTH, THAT NEBUCHADNEZZAR KING OF BABYLON CAME, HE, AND ALL HIS HOST, AGAINST JERUSALEM, AND PITCHED AGAINST IT; AND THEY BUILT FORTS AGAINST IT ROUND ABOUT._ Nebuchadnezzar ... came ... against Jerusalem, and pitched against it. Incensed by the revolt of Zedekiah, the Assyrian despot determined to put an end to the perfidious and inconstant monarchy of Judah. This chapter narrates his third and last invasion, which he conducted in person at the head of an immense army, levied out of all the tributary nations under his sway. Having overrun the northern parts of the country, and taken almost all the fenced cities (Jeremiah 34:7), he marched direct to Jerusalem to invest it. 1-7 Jerusalem was so fortified, that it could not be taken till famine rendered the besieged unable to resist. In the prophecy and Lamentations of Jeremiah, we find more of this event; here it suffices to say, that the impiety and misery of the besieged were very great. At length the city was taken by storm. The king, his family, and his great men escaped in the night, by secret passages. But those deceive themselves who think to escape God's judgments, as much as those who think to brave them. By what befell Zedekiah, two prophecies, which seemed to contradict each other, were both fulfilled. CHAPTER XXV _Nebuchadnezzar besieges Jerusalem; it is taken, after having_ _been sorely reduced by famine, c. and Zedekiah, endeavouring_ _to make his escape, is made prisoner, his sons slain before his_ _eyes; then, his eyes being put out, he is put in chains and_ _carried to Babylon_, 1-7. _Nebuzar-adan burns the temple, breaks down the walls of_ _Jerusalem, and carries away the people captives, leaving only a_ _few to till the ground_, 8-12. _He takes away all the brass, and all the vessels of the temple_, 13-17....

IN THE NINTH YEAR ... - As the final catastrophe approaches, the historian becomes more close and exact in his dates, marking not only the year, but the month and the day, on which the siege began, no less than those on which it closed 2 Kings 25:3. From Ezekiel 24:1 we find that on the very day when the host of Nebuchadnezzar made its appearance before Jerusalem the fact was revealed to Ezekiel in Babylonia, and the fate of the city announced to him Ezekiel 24:6.
