2 Kings 9:26

_SURELY I HAVE SEEN YESTERDAY THE BLOOD OF NABOTH, AND THE BLOOD OF HIS SONS, SAITH THE LORD; AND I WILL REQUITE THEE IN THIS PLAT, SAITH THE LORD. NOW THEREFORE TAKE AND CAST HIM INTO THE PLAT OF GROUND, ACCORDING TO THE WORD OF THE LORD._ The blood of Naboth, and the blood of his sons. Although their death is not expressly mentioned, it is plainly implied in the confiscation of his property (see the notes at 1 Kings 21:16). I WILL REQUITE THEE IN THIS PLAT. It was not from any preconcerted design on the part of Jehu that the descendants of Ahab were killed in the very place where the blood of Naboth had been wickedly shed; for he unexpectedly met Joram in the portion of Naboth. Jehu put his captain in mind of the prophecy, and it seems from his mentioning it, to have remained, at the distance of twenty-five years, as vividly impressed on his own memory as

16-29 Jehu was a man of eager spirit. The wisdom of God is seen in the choice of those employed in his work. But it is not for any man's reputation to be known by his fury. He that has rule over his own spirit, is better than the mighty. Joram met Jehu in the portion of Naboth. The circumstances of events are sometimes ordered by Divine Providence to make the punishment answer to the sin, as face answers to face in a glass. The way of sin can never be the way of peace, Isaiah 57:21. What peace can sinners have with God? No peace so long as sin is persisted in; but when it is repented of and forsaken, there is peace. Joram died as a criminal, under the sentence of the law. Ahaziah was joined with the house of Ahab. He was one of them; he had made himself so by sin. It is dangerous to join evil-doers; we shall be entangled in guilt and misery by it....

Verse 26. _THE BLOOD OF NABOTH, AND THE BLOOD OF HIS SONS_] We are not informed in 1 Kings 21 that any of Naboth's _family_ was slain but himself: but as the object both of Ahab and Jezebel was to have Naboth's vineyard entirely, and _for ever_, it is not likely that they would leave any of his posterity, who might at a future time reclaim it as their inheritance. Again, to secure this point, Jezebel had Naboth convicted of _treason_ and _atheism_; in order that his whole family might be involved in his ruin....

The passage from “Surely I have seen” to “Saith the Lord,” is exegetical of 2 Kings 9:25, containing the “burden” there spoken of. AND THE BLOOD OF HIS SONS - The murder of Naboth’s sons is here for the first time mentioned; but as the removal of the sons was necessary, if the vineyard was to pass to Ahab, we can well understand that Jezebel would take care to clear them out of the way....

These are the words of the Lord to Elijah the day after Naboth was put to death: AND THE BLOOD OF HIS SONS, SAID THE LORD; who were put to death with him, that there might be no heirs to the estate: AND I WILL REQUITE THEE IN THIS PLACE: take vengeance here, as he now did on his son: NOW THEREFORE TAKE [AND] CAST HIM INTO THE PLAT [OF GROUND], ACCORDING TO THE WORD OF THE LORD; whereby it would be fulfilled, see 1 Kings 21:19, more is here recited than there, which Jehu well remembered....

2 KINGS 9:1 TO 2 KINGS 10:31. THE REVOLUTION AND OVERTHROW OF THE BAAL WORSHIP. This spirited narrative is probably derived from the same source as 1 Kings 20, 22; and, if we strike out the short Deuteronomic portion (2 Kings 9:7), we cannot fail to notice the detachment of the writer, who neither condemns nor approves, but merely relates the tragedy. Hosea (Hosea 1:4), a little more than a century later, evidently condemns the whole transaction, and traces the fall of Jehu's house to the blood of Jezreel. This is in strong contrast with the Deuteronomic passage,...

_the blood of Naboth, and the blood of his sons_ It appears from this that Jezebel in order that she might put all claimants out of the way, had caused the family of Naboth to be killed as well as himself.
