Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. NEVERTHELESS - in contrast to the destructive effects of the day of God stand its constructive effects. As the flood was the earth's baptism, eventuating in its renovation and partial deliverance from 'the curse,' so its baptism with fire shall purify it, to be the renovated abode of regenerated man, wholly freed from the curse. HIS PROMISE - (; .) "We" is not emphatic. NEW HEAVENS - new atmospheric, surrounding the renovated earth. RIGHTEOUSNESS - dwelleth in that world as its home, all pollutions having been removed; all other enjoyments are the accidents; righteousness is the essence of heavenly enjoyment....

11-18 From the doctrine of Christ's second coming, we are exhorted to purity and godliness. This is the effect of real knowledge. Very exact and universal holiness is enjoined, not resting in any low measure or degree. True Christians look for new heavens and a new earth; freed from the vanity to which things present are subject, and the sin they are polluted with. Those only who are clothed with the righteousness of Christ, and sanctified by the Holy Ghost, shall be admitted to dwell in this holy place. He is faithful, who has promised. Verse 13. _WE, ACCORDING TO HIS PROMISE, LOOK FOR NEW HEAVENS_] The promise to which it is supposed the apostle alludes, is found Isaiah 65:17: _Behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former shall_ _not be remembered, nor come into mind_; and Isaiah 66:22: _For as the new heavens and the new earth which I will make shall_ _remain before me, saith the Lord, so shall your seed_, c. Now, although these may be interpreted of the _glory of the Gospel_ _dispensation_, yet, if St. Peter refer to them, they must have a more _extended_ meaning. It does appear, from these promises, that the apostle says here, and what is said Revelation 21:27;...

NEVERTHELESS WE, ACCORDING TO HIS PROMISE - The allusion here seems to be, beyond a doubt, to two passages in Isaiah, in which a promise of this kind is found. Isaiah 65:17; “for, behold, I create new heavens, and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.” Isaiah 66:22; “for as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the Lord,” etc. Compare Revelation 21:1, where John says he had a vision of the new heaven and the new earth which was promised: “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away, and there was no more sea.” See the notes at...

EXPOSITION 2 PETER 3:1 THIS SECOND EPISTLE, BELOVED, I NOW WRITE UNTO YOU; literally, _this Epistle already a second one I write unto you. _The ἤδη ("already") implies that the interval between the two Epistles was not long. The expression "beloved," four times repeated in this chapter, shows the apostle's affectionate interest in his readers; and the word "second" forces us to make our choice between the Petrine authorship of the Epistle or the hypothesis of a direct forgery. EXHORTATION AND CONCLUSION (2 PETER 3:11) 2 Peter 3:1 The opening statement shows conclusively that Peter is the author and that this second Epistle was sent to the same believers to whom the first Epistle was addressed. The critics claim that this chapter marks a separate Epistle in itself and that it was combined by mistake with the preceding two Chapter s. Like so much else the critics put forth this is a foolish speculation wholly unwarranted

Moreover the Lord is not really slow to fulfil His promise; He does not reckon time as men reckon. His seeming slowness is not the manifestation of His impotence, but of His long-suffering love (_cf._ 2 Peter 3:15). His purpose is that time for repentance should be given to all; when the end comes it will be sudden, and there will be no time for repentance then. The fact that all material things will pass away constitutes a call to holy living (we can see here, _per contra,_ the connexion between the libertinism of the false teachers and their disbelief in the Parousia), especially since we look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein righteousness dwelleth (_cf._ Isaiah 65:17, Enoch 91: 16). 2 Peter 3:12.
