2 Samuel 24:23

_ALL THESE THINGS DID ARAUNAH, AS A KING, GIVE UNTO THE KING. AND ARAUNAH SAID UNTO THE KING, THE LORD THY GOD ACCEPT THEE._ All these things did Araunah, as a king, х_ 'ARAWªNAAH_ (H728) _ HAMELEK_ (H4428)] - Araunah the king; probably the hereditary chief of the ancient Jebusites. ARAUNAH SAID UNTO THE KING, THE LORD THY GOD ACCEPT THEE. The conduct of Araunah not only evinces a generous disposition and deep sympathy with David and his people in the alarming crisis, but this expression of his pious wishes creates a presumption that he had become a proselyte to the faith....

18-25 God's encouraging us to offer to him spiritual sacrifices, is an evidence of his reconciling us to himself. David purchased the ground to build the altar. God hates robbery for burnt-offering. Those know not what religion is, who chiefly care to make it cheap and easy to themselves, and who are best pleased with that which costs them least pains or money. For what have we our substance, but to honour God with it; and how can it be better bestowed? See the building of the altar, and the offering proper sacrifices upon it. Burnt-offerings to the glory of God's justice; peace-offerings to the glory of his mercy. Christ is our Altar, our Sacrifice; in him alone we may expect to escape his wrath, and to find favour with God. Death is destroying all around, in so many forms, and so suddenly, that it is madness not to expect and prepare for the close of life....

Verse 2 Samuel 24:23. _AS A KING, GIVE UNTO THE KING._] Literally, _All these_ _did King Araunah give unto the king_. That there could not be a king of the Jebusites on Mount Moriah, is sufficiently evident; and that there was no other king than David in the land, is equally so: the word המלך _hammelech_, "the king," given here to Araunah, is wanting in the _Septuagint, Syriac_, and _Arabic_; in _three_ of Kennicott's and De Rossi's MSS., and in the parallel place in Chronicles: and, it is very probable, never made a part of the text. Perhaps it should be read, _All these did Arnunah give_ _unto the king_. There is, however, a difficulty here. David had taken the fortress of the Jebusites many years before; yet it is evident that Araunah was proprietor of the soil at this time. It is not clear that he was a subject of David;

Either, “the whole O king does Araunah give unto the king;” or (2) “the whole did king Araunah give to the king.” The former is preferable....

EXPOSITION 2 SAMUEL 24:1 AND AGAIN THE ANGER OF JEHOVAH WAS KINDLED AGAINST ISRAEL. It is probable that this chapter once stood in intimate connection with 2 Samuel 21:1; and that the famine therein described was followed by a pestilence, of which the blame largely rested upon David, though the sin punished by it was fully shared by the people. In saying that David was moved of Jehovah to number Israel and Judah, the writer acknowledges the great truth that all action, both good and evil, is of God.
