11_On which account we pray always_. That they may know that they need continual help from God, he declares that he prays in their behalf. When he says _on this account_, he means, in order that they may reach that final goal of their course, as appears from the succeeding context, _that he would fulfill all the good pleasure_, etc. It may seem, however, as if what he has mentioned first were unnecessary, for God had already _accounted them worthy of his calling_. He speaks, however, as to the end or completion, which depends on perseverance. For as we are liable to give way, our _calling _would not fail, so far as we are concerned, to prove sooner or later vain, if God did not confirm it. 11,12 Believing thoughts and expectations of the second coming of Christ should lead us to pray to God more, for ourselves and others. If there is any good in us, it is owing to the good pleasure of his goodness, and therefore it is called grace. There are many purposes of grace and good-will in God toward his people, and the apostle prays that God would complete in them the work of faith with power. This is to their doing every other good work. The power of God not only begins, but carries on the work of faith. EXPOSITION CONTENTS.—Paul, after the address and salutation, commences this Epistle by rendering thanks to God for the welcome intelligence he had received of the increase of the faith and love of his Thessalonian converts, so that he was enabled to boast of them throughout all the Churches of Achaia, on account of their steadfastness in the endurance of continued persecution. Their present suffering was an evidence of a future state of retribution, when the justice of God would be vindicated, and affliction would be rendered to their persecutors and rest to them the persecuted, on that great day when the Lord Jesus would appear in glory for the destruction of his enemies and the glorification of his people. WHEREFORE ALSO WE PRAY ALWAYS FOR YOU,.... Not only observe the above things to your comfort, to support you under sufferings, but we add our prayers, and not only now, but always, that you may be among them in whom Christ will be glorified and admired; in order to which we most sincerely pray, THAT OUR GOD WOULD COUNT YOU WORTHY OF THIS CALLING.
