Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them. SAYING, THOU WENTEST IN TO MEN UNCIRCUMCISED, AND DIDST EAT WITH THEM - (see the note at .) These objectors, it will be observed, scruple not to demand of Peter-though the first among the apostles, and up to this time the prime mover in the Church-an explanation of his conduct; nor does Peter, in his reply, insinuate that in this they had been wanting in proper deference to his authority-a manifest proof that such authority was unknown alike to them and to him....

3._Unto men being uncircumcised. _This was not forbidden by the law of God, but it was a tradition which came from the fathers. And yet, notwithstanding, Peter doth not object that they dealt too hardly (726) with him in this point, and that he was not bound by the necessity of man’s law. Verse Acts 11:3. _THOU WENTEST IN TO MEN UNCIRCUMCISED_] In a Jew, this was no small offense; and, as they did not know the reason of St. Peter's conduct, it is no wonder they should call him to account for it, as they considered it to be a positive transgression of the law and custom of the Jews. There is a remarkable addition here in the _Codex Bezae_, which it will be well to notice. The second verse of the chapter begins thus:- _Now Peter had a desire for a considerable time to go to_ _Jerusalem: and having spoken to the brethren, and confirmed them,_ _speaking largely, he taught them through the countries_, (i.e. as he passed to Jerusalem,) _and, as he met them, he spoke to them of_ _the grace of God. EXPOSITION ACTS 11:1 _Now_ for _and_, A.V.; _the_ _brethren _for brethren, A.V.; _also had_ for _had also_, A.V, We can imagine how rapidly the news of the great revolution would travel to the metropolis of Jewish Christianity, and what a stir it would maim in that community. PETER DEFENDS HIS ACTION AT JERUSALEM. As Philip's action at Samaria (Acts 8:14), so here Peter's doings at Cæ sarea are reported at Jerusalem.
