Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked. SAID WITH A LOUD VOICE, STAND UPRIGHT ON THY FEET. The effect was instantaneous and the cure perfect. AND HE LEAPED (OR SPRANG UP) AND WALKED. − 10._He said with a loud voice. _Many old books, − (19) and those of great credit, add, “I say to thee in the name of Jesus Christ,” and surely we see how careful the apostles were to magnify the name of Christ in all miracles; therefore I think that that was expressed by Luke, and yet we cannot find it commonly now in the printed books, [copies.] Whereas Luke saith afterward, that the lame man leapt up, it serveth not only for the commendation of God’s power, but also such readiness and willingness to obey did testify that he was rightly prepared by the Lord; so that he did already walk in mind when as his feet were as yet dead. Although his speed in rising made the power of God more manifest, to which end also Paul exalted his voice, that the sudden change might the more move the multitude. “ Codices,” manuscripts or copies....

8-18 All things are possible to those that believe. When we have faith, that most precious gift of God, we shall be delivered from the spiritual helplessness in which we were born, and from the dominion of sinful habits since formed; we shall be made able to stand upright and walk cheerfully in the ways of the Lord. When Christ, the Son of God, appeared in the likeness of men, and did many miracles, men were so far from doing sacrifice to him, that they made him a sacrifice to their pride and malice; but Paul and Barnabas, upon their working one miracle, were treated as gods. Verse Acts 14:10. _SAID WITH A LOUD VOICE_] After this clause the following is found in CD, and several others, either in the text or margin: σοι λεγω εν τῳ ονοματι του Κυριου Ιησου Χριστου, _I say_ _unto thee, In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ_, "stand upright on thy feet." This reading is also in several _versions_; and though it may not stand on such evidence as to entitle it to a place in the text, yet it is not likely that St. Paul would not have used the _sacred name_ on such an occasion; especially as this appears to have been the usual form. See Acts 3:6. _HE LEAPED AND WALKED._] Giving the fullest proof of his restoration: his _leaping_, however, might have been through joy of having received his cure....

SAID WITH A LOUD VOICE,.... Not only that the man, but that all might hear and attend to the miracle about to be wrought: STAND UPRIGHT ON THY FEET; in five of Beza's manuscripts, and in other copies, and in the Complutensian edition, and in the Syriac version, this clause is introduced with these words, "I say unto thee, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ"; which is much such a form that Peter used, Acts 3:6 whereby the virtue of the miracle is ascribed to Christ, and not assumed by the apostle: AND HE LEAPED AND WALKED; he sprung up directly from his seat, and leaped about for joy, and walked as well as any other man could....

CHAPTER 14 _ 1. The work in Iconium and the persecution of the Apostles (Acts 14:1)._ 2. In Derbe and Lystra; the Impotent Man healed (Acts 14:7). 3. The Stoning of Paul and further ministries (Acts 14:19). 4. The Return to Antioch (Acts 14:25). Iconium was a Phrygian town, bordering on Lycaonia. Here again the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles. They abode there a long time, and in spite of opposition and persecution they spoke with much boldness the Word of God. LYSTRA. Lystra, 25 miles SW. of Iconium, 10 miles off the trade route, in a secluded glen. Lystra and Derbe were the two cities of the Lycaonian region of Galatia; Roman influence was strong there, and Lystra was a Roman colony. The cure of a lame man in connexion with the preaching leads to serious consequences. The incident reminds us forcibly of Acts 3:2; in both cases the lameness is congenital, and the man leaps. In this case, however, faith plays the part it does in the Gospels; it is awakened apparently by Paul's preaching. Of the language of Lycaonia nothing is now known; _the_ mention of it is like a mist over the whole story.
