Verse Acts 20:9. _THERE SAT IN A WINDOW_] This was probably an opening in the wall, to let in light and air, for there was no _glazing_ at that time; and it is likely that Eutychus fell backward through it, down to the ground, on the outside; there being nothing to prevent his falling _out_, when he had once lost the power to take care of himself, by getting into a deep sleep....

AND THERE SAT IN A WINDOW - The window was left open, probably to avoid the malice of their enemies, who might be disposed otherwise to charge them with holding their assemblies in darkness for purposes of iniquity. The window was probably a mere opening in the wall to let in light, as glass was not common at that time. As the shutters of the window were not closed, there was nothing to prevent Eutychus from falling down. THE THIRD LOFT - The third story. AND WAS TAKEN UP DEAD - Some have supposed that he was merely stunned with the fall, and that he was still alive. But the obvious meaning is, that he was actually killed by the fall, and was miraculously restored to life. This is an instance of sleeping in public worship that has some apology. The late hour of the night, and the length of the services, were the excuse. But, though the thing is often done now,

STORY OF EUTYCHUS. Paul speaks of the first day of the week in 1 Corinthians 16:2, but not of a breaking of bread on that day, which appears here as an established usage (_cf. Acts 24:2_). It is Paul's last interview with these people, and he makes the most of it. The lights may be mentioned because of the accusation in early days that the Lord's Supper was partaken of in darkness and was accompanied by excesses. Eutychus (Acts 20:9) is a common name.
