Acts 23:33

25-35 God has instruments for every work. The natural abilities and moral virtues of the heathens often have been employed to protect his persecuted servants. Even the men of the world can discern between the conscientious conduct of upright believers, and the zeal of false professors, though they disregard or understand not their doctrinal principles. All hearts are in God's hand, and those are blessed who put their trust in him, and commit their ways unto him....

Verse Acts 23:33. _WHO_] That is, the seventy horsemen mentioned above....

WHO, WHEN THEY CAME TO CAESAREA,.... The seventy horsemen: AND DELIVERED THE EPISTLE TO THE GOVERNOR; to Felix, governor of Judea, who was now at Caesarea; namely, the letter which Claudius Lysias, the chief captain, sent to him; the form and contents of which are before given: THESE PRESENTED PAUL ALSO BEFORE HIM; concerning whom, and whose affairs, the letter was....

ARRIVAL AT CÆ SAREA. Antipatris (p. 28), a Greek town even the name of which has disappeared, was where Ras-el-Ain is now, on the road from Lydda to Cæ sarea, 40 miles from Jerusalem, 25 from Cæ sarea. 40 miles are more than a night's march for infantry. The procurator asks the necessary question as to the province of the prisoner (_cf._ Luke 23:6 f.), and undertakes to hear the case when the prosecutors arrive. Of the præ torium (_mg.)_ of Herod at Cæ sarea nothing is known....

WHEN THEY CAME. having entered. DELIVERED. having delivered. Greek. _anadidomi._ Only here. EPISTLE. Same as letter, Acts 23:25. BEFORE. to....

_who, when they came to Cesarea_ The _Rev. Ver._breaks up the relative into a conjunction and a personal pronoun. "And they, when, &c." This makes the reference to the horsemen more clear. _and delivered the epistle_[LETTER] _to the governor_ It is not easy to see what led the A. V. to give "epistle" here and "letter" for the same word in Acts 23:25. Sometimes rhythm may account for such a variation, but that is not the case here. _presented Paul also_ If the letter as given above be a copy of the original, the prisoner was not mentioned in it by name, but the soldiers would merely declare that this was the man that had been committed to their charge....
