For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:

After this manner - with the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit (cf. the portrait of the godly wife, Proverbs 31:10).

Trusted, [ elpizousai (G1679) eis (G1519) Theon (G2316)]. "Holy" is explained by 'hoped in (so as to be united to) God.' Hope in God is the spring of holiness.

In subjection - their ornament consisted in subordination. Vanity was forbidden (1 Peter 3:3), as contrary to female subjection.
