When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, there is shouting.

When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth. Because the well-being of the righteous in a State tends to the well-being of the whole state: for the righteous use their prosperity for the good of all around them, and God, for their sake, blesses all with whom they are allied (; cf. ). And when the wicked perish, there is shouting - exultation at the deliverance from the vexations, oppressions, and scandals caused by the wicked.
