PART III (2 Chronicles 1-9). The History of the Reign of Solomon

2 Chronicles 1:1. Solomon at Gibeon (see notes on 1 Kings 3:4).

2 Chronicles 1:1. There is nothing corresponding to these verses in 1 K. excepting the reference to Gibeon in 1 Kings 3:4.

2 Chronicles 1:3. for there was the tent of meeting: the earlier history makes no mention of this; it was probably inserted by the Chronicler in order to explain away what would to him have appeared unthinkable in a God-fearing king, viz. worshipping at a high place (bamah); cf. Leviticus 17:8 f. The presence in Gibeon of the brazen altar, according to the Chronicler, would also, in his eyes, have justified Solomon in worshipping there; no mention is made, however, in 1 Kings 3:4 of the brazen altar being at Gibeon.

2 Chronicles 1:7. See notes on 1 Kings 3:5, upon which this passage is based; the variations are unimportant.

2 Chronicles 1:14. Solomon's Wealth (see notes on 1 Kings 10:26 and cf. 1 Chronicles 9:25). The position of this section, as compared with the sequence of the history in 1 K., suggests that the source which the Chronicler had before him was not in all respects identical with the present form of 1 K.
