There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat.

Ver. 7. An alabaster box of very precious, &c.] Pliny telleth us that they were wont to keep the most costly ointments in boxes of alabaster. And Herodotus reckoneth μυρου αλαβαστρον, an alabaster box of ointment, among the precious things that Cambyses the Persian sent for a present to the king of Ethiopia.
