Mark 1:16

At the death of Solomon, Rehoboam, his son, was crowned king, upon which the Ten Northern Tribes revolted, and set up an independent kingdom under Jeroboam, which, under nineteen different kings, continued for nearly 250 years, when the people were carried captive to Assyria, and never returned. The kingdom of Judah, under Rehoboam. and his successors, continued until B. C. 606.

This body of water is designated in the Scriptures by various names: In Deuteronomy 3:17, it is called Chinnereth, or as the word is sometimes spelled (1 Kings 15:20) Cinneroth, from. city and district on the western shore (Joshua 19:35; Numbers 34:11); in Luke 5:1, it is spoken of as the Lake of Gennesaret; in Matthew 4:18 and Mark 1:16, it is the Sea of Galilee, from the province on its western shore, in John 6:1; John 21:1, it is called the Sea of Tiberias, from. city built by Herod on the southwest shore, and named in honor of the Emperor Tiberias, The Sea or Lake is about twelve miles long and six wide, in. deep basin surrounded by high hills. The River Jordan enters it at the northern extremity and issues from it at the southern, on it; way to the Dead Sea. It is still famous for its clear, pure water, fish, and frequent storms.
