ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης. Although this might mean ‘on the seashore’ (John 21:1), yet the context plainly shews that here it means ‘on the surface of the sea.’ Winer, p. 468. Would they have been frightened by seeing Jesus walking on the shore? S. Mark says it was about the fourth watch, i.e. between 3.0 and 6.0 A.M. S. Matthew alone gives S. Peter’s walking on the sea. S. Luke omits the whole incident.
