συκῆν … πεφυτευμένην ἐν τῷ�. The corners of vineyards were often utilised in this way, as they still are (Tristram, Nat. Hist. Bib. p. 352). Here the Jewish nation is compared to the fig-tree (Hosea 9:10; Jeremiah 24:3), as in the acted parable of the Barren Fig-tree (Matthew 21:19); more often Israel is compared to the Vine or the Vineyard (Psalms 80:8-11; Isaiah 5:2).
